Heeramandi: An Over Thought Out Review

Instagram Fails The Dopamine Test

Remember when Orkut first came on the block? The new, interesting social media world captured everyone’s attention. Then came Facebook. And you know what has led to the success of these two giant social media platforms? The feel good factor!

People were liking, commenting, interacting all the time. It was a thriving community where everyone was reaching out to one another.

It was nice to open your account and see 50 notifications, knowing that people are thinking of you, liking your posts, basically interacting with you.

Then came Instagram and gave instant vanity gratification. Watching 100s of likes for a picture of your face does feel good. And then came Instagram algorithm and reach issues. Now whenever you post, forget the dopamine rush of 100s of likes, the first thing you need to worry about is the perfect caption, hashtag strategy, worry about the interaction levels. And after all of this, you’ll barely get any activity (unless of course, you do silly dance moves to whatever song that’s trending).

Instagram has now become more work than fun, which is exactly why I believe now there is a huge potential and need for a new Social Media app to fill in the gap.

I mean Tiktok did fill in the space for a bit, the reach there was easy to get and there was instant Dopamine hit the moment you open the app – even if in the form of cringe content.

What are you views on this? Do we need a new Social Media platform?

  1. I will say I never did Instagram. I think social media isn't a bad thing in many ways, but it seems one thing is popular then as a new media comes along the older ones get less popular. I guess it depends if you want to get lots of views & what outlet you use and how willing you are to keep changing what you use. Have a great new week. Hugs-Erika

  2. I definitely agree that all the algorithm changes on Instagram plus the shift from being a photo sharing app to a video app has made it not fun to use anymore. I'm not sure if there's a need for a new social media platform though because there are already so many different platforms.

  3. As someone who doesn't ever get any likes on anything I post, what dopamine hit?

  5. I don't post much at all on Social Media because it does feel like work.

  6. I found myself, slow venturing onto social media, but for the wrong reasons. I think they are all a trap and isolate us more. I say get out from behind the camera and look at the world with your own eyes for your self.

  7. Interesting and thought provoking blog post. We need to either reshape the Instagram or go for a new Social Media platform. Is it OK if I forward your this post to Elon Musk?

  8. I don't know about a new app but we definitely need a slow app. One that does not throw content at me every second of every day.

  9. Until any new social media platform starts showing ads, or monetizes in some way, it will be fun. But they too will eventually want to make money.

  10. I think most of these 100+ likes etc are paid things. I am in the process of slowly getting out of it (instagram) Not worth the effort. Better to concentrate on Blogging and creating videos (for my own satisfaction)

  11. I liked the concept of a social site Path. I am mostly using Google Blogger unconsciously following the Path objective, I think.
